Yahoo! Live
http://live.yahoo.com/
Kind of like Kyte, except with better UI – but it does not do video streaming captured on mobile phones which the Kyte platform allows.
In a gist: Yahoo Live allows anyone with a Yahoo ID to broadcast webcam video stream from multiple users at the same time. Y! Live was previously used at the Winter Music Conference which streamed live video stream from different events: http://live.yahoo.com/evt/wmc/
Y! Live is currently under an experimental release, and supports a highly customizable widget for your live feed. I will provide more details after I play around with this a little bit further.
Bonus: you can follow @ylive on Twitter to see if there’s anyone broadcasting live from the site: an interesting idea to get audience.
Updates
+ 2008-04-27: In the original blog post published on 2008-04-25, I have incorrectly stated that Yahoo! Live does not have native Facebook and MySpace support, and i was informed by the development team that there is in fact two Facebook apps and MySpace implementation developed. Details to be posted shortly.

Who would of thought that my 200 Most Interesting Gay Pride New York 2007 (set) would have reached 10,172 audience since I put them up on Flickr last June?
As such I've decided to create a quick slideshow of all the photos (no audio track for now... but will try to put some grooves on it later:

Social networking explained by CommonCraft
Folks from CommonCraft did it again. This time, they aim at explaining social networking to peeps in plain English:
The main focus of the video is the exploration of the core idea in network theory: "your weak links are your strong connection." The video suggests that social networks make these weak relationship apparent. Unless these applications allow an easier way to explore your friends' friends, I don't think that it is that apparent.
It does point out an important feature that most social network lacks: a way to explore your 2nd degree of separation, and perhaps your third. LinkedIn tries to do that by allowing users to only see profiles from people within your cluster. Most people don't realize that: of the 375 connections I have had on LinkedIn, that has only happened to me once, which felt really awkward to me at first, but after a while it was apparent what they were trying to do. Still a bit awkward.
SML Thank You
I would like to thank Olivia Lin, a video extraordinaire that I've only met on Facebook for sending me this wonderful video. When I finally meet Olivia in person, she would become a few handful of people who belong in my Life 2.0 circles--something which I have been drafting in my mind but never got my acts together to write about!

Guitar Hero Porn
I was first introduced to Guitar Hero by Brian Loube. I liked the game but I never thought that people are so serious about the game.
I found this on YouTube togday of some college kid playing expert on Guitar Hero 3 Through the Fire and Flames. Like his buddy says, it's sick. The guy's fingers are more like a machine. This kid would make a perfect piano player, if piano lessons can be this much fun for him. And why not, music notes can roll this way, too, no?

UGC = Love + Culture + Free Speech / Larry Lessig / TED Talks
Stanford professor Larry Lessig gets TEDsters to their feet, whooping and whistling, following this elegant presentation of "three stories and an argument." The Net's most adored lawyer brings together John Philip Sousa, celestial copyrights, and the "ASCAP cartel" to build a case for creative freedom. He pins down the key shortcomings of our dusty, pre-digital intellectual property laws, and reveals how bad laws beget bad code. Then, in an homage to cutting-edge artistry, he throws in some of the most hilarious remixes you've ever seen.

Burger King Multimedia Menu
When Adam, Brad and I went upstate to skydive, we stopped by a Burger King on our way to get some food. We didn't notice it at first but it appears that they have started installing multimedia monitors in place of their static printed menus:

Skyrails = Social network visualization
I found this amazing 3d interactive visualization of social networks while browsing posts from my friends' friends' blogs on Facebook:
Skyrails is developed by Yose Widjaja (Google / SML Wiki). When he's not busy working on Skyrails, he writes Flash games. Very cool.

Gregory Kirschenbaum - AspireToGreatness.com - 2007.10.23 / SML Fine Art
Yesterday I was having lunch in soho and I passed by an artist named Gregory Kirschenbaum (Google). He uses metal pigment (zinc, copper, iron, bronze) with an array of acid to bring out the natural oxidation on cotton canvas. I did an adhoc video interview with him because I thought that great art ought to be shared:
YouTube: Gregory Kirschenbaum - AspireToGreatness.com - 2007.10.23 / SML Channel
About Gregory Kirschenbaum
Gregory Kirschenbaum (born 1969-09-21) grew up in New York with arts around him. His dad, Daniel Kirschenbaum, is an architect who helped design many New York public projects, including the La Guardia Airport.
Many people from the advertising world often mistaken Gregory to be related to Kirschenbaum Bond & Partners (Google). GK is not related to KBP by blood, but it turns out that KBP is a patron of Gregory. In addition, Gregory has produced some copper on cotton shirts which have been collected by the fashion icon Valentino (Wikipedia).
Collaboration
Gregory is currently collaborating with Andrew Cotton (Google) and will be having an opening on Saturday, 2007-11-03 at the Ward-Nasse Gallery, the only non-profit art gallery in soho New York City. The opening is scheduled to last for an unprecedented nine hours: from 3pm to midnight.
Opening Reception
Upcoming: Gregory Kirschenbaum + Andrew Cotton / Collaboration show opening reception
2007-11-03, Saturday, 3pm to midnight

Very inspiring work. Needless to say, I look forward to the event. Highly recommended!

Advanced Python or Understanding Python / Google Video
Google Video: Advanced Python or Understanding Python
Google Tech Talks February 21, 2007
Speaker: Thomas Wouters
ABSTRACT
The Python language, while object-oriented, is fundamentally different from both C++ and Java. The dynamic and introspective nature of Python allow for language mechanics unlike that of static languages. This talk aims to enlighten programmers new to Python about these fundamentals, the language mechanics that flow from them and how to effectively put those to use. Among the topics covered are duck-typing, interfaces, descriptors, decorators, metaclasses, reference-counting and the cyclic-garbage collector, the divide between C/C++ data and Python objects and the CPython implementation in general.
This talk is part of the Advanced Topics in Programming Languages series. The goal of this series is to encourage all of the people at Google who know and love programming languages to share their knowledge. If you would like information on upcoming talks, or to schedule a talk of your own, contact information is available on the wiki page.

Mojiti = UGC on UGC
Mojiti allows users personalize any videos online with annotation in text, audio, or even video on top of the original video!
Here's a demo of it in action (Mojiti: Sony Bravia)
It has certainly taken user-generated content to the next level--it's UGC on top of UGC. Pretty cool!

Social Bookmarking in Plain English / Common Craft
Last year, I did a presentation on del.icio.us to a group of designers at work, because I felt that it is an awesome tool. I still find myself spending a whole lot of time everyday trying to explain why I like it so much.
Last week I found this awesome video tutorial posted on the official del.icio.us blog and it explains the concept much better than I can. As such, I present to you: Social Bookmarking in Plain English by the wonderful folks at Common Craft:

Human Computation / Google TechTalks
Recently I proposed an alternative method for human identification on my blog so when a friend sent me this video via Del.icio.us, I was absolutely delighted:
Google Video: Human Computation / Google TechTalks 2006-07-26
Luis von Ahn
- Assistant Professor, Computer Science Department, Carnegie Mellon University
- Ph.D. Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, 2005
- B.S. Mathematics, Duke University, 2000
- Recipient, Microsoft Research Fellowship
Key points
- Tasks like image recognition are trivial for humans, but continue to challenge even the most sophisticated computer programs.
- Utilize human processing power to solve problems that computers cannot yet solve.
- Traditional approaches to solving such problems focus on improving software.
- Luis von Ahn advocates a novel approach: constructivly channel human brainpower using computer games.
- ESP Game = an enjoyable online game that help label images on the Web with descriptive keywords
- These keywords can be used to improve the accuracy of image search.
- People play the game not because they want to help, but because they enjoy it.
Fun Facts
- Number of human-hours spent playing Solitaire in 2003 = 9 billion human-hours
- Number of human-hours spent building the Empire State Building = 7 million human-hours (6.8 hours of Solitaire)
- Number of human-hours spent building the Panama Canal = 20 million human-hours (less than a day of Solitaire)
